So I'm a social scientist by training,so why am I here today talking about smart materials?
私は社会科学者で、今日なぜここでスマート素材について話しているかというと。
Well first of all, because I am a maker.
まずはじめに、私はメーカーだからです。
I'm curious about how things work and how they are made,
私は、どうやってモノが動くのか,どうやって作られるのかに興味があります。
but also because I believe we should have a deeper understanding of the componets that make up our world,
そして何より、私は私達が私達の世界を作っているモノについて、より深い知識を得るべきだと考えています。
and right now, we don't know enough about these high-tech composites our future will be made of.
もちろん、私達は未来のハイテク混合物について十分な知識を持ち合わせていません。
Smart materials are hard to obtain in small quantities.
スマート素材を少量手に入れるのは難しいです。
There's barely any information available on how to use them,
かろうじて使用方法についての情報を手に入れられる程度です。
and very little is said about how they are produced.
そして、どうやって作られるのかはとても少ししか聞きません。
So for now, they exist mostly in this realm of trade secrets and patents only universities and corporations have access to.
今のところ、これらはほとんど大学と企業だけの企業秘密や特許の領域です。
So a little over three years ago, Kirsty Boyle and I started a project we called Open Materials.
3年とちょっと前、カースティー・ボイルと私で、私達がオープンマテリアルと呼ぶプロジェクトを始めました。
It's a website where we,and anyone else who wants to join us, share experiments, publish information,
これは私達のWebサイトで、私達の活動に加わりたい人は誰でも、経験を共有したり、情報を発信したり、
encourage others to contribute whenever they can,
他の人がいつでも配布することを推奨しています。
and aggregate resources such as research papers and tutorials by other makers like ourselves.
そして、研究報告や私達のような他のメーカーのためのチュートリアルなどを集めています。

この活動はとても面白いと思う。
IT界隈だと昔から『オープンソース』という活動があるし、最近だとArduinoとか『オープンハードウェア』もありますね。
ちなみに今年初めてオープンソースカンファレンスに参加してきました。参加者の年齢層が幅広くて、とても歴史ある活動なんだと実感したわけです。
オープンマテリアルのWebサイトを早速見てきましたが、みんな面白いことやってますね。
参考にして何か作ってみたくなりました。
さて、次回のTOEIC受験は5月か6月にしようと思います。（たぶん6月かな）
