Let me tell you a story.
あるお話をしましょう。
It goes back 200 million years.
2億年まえに遡ります。
It's a story of the neocortex,which means a "new rind."
これは脳の新皮質についてのことで、“新しい皮”を意味します。
So in these early mammals,because only mammals have a neocortex, rodent-liker creatures.
初期の哺乳動物、（新皮質を持っているのは哺乳動物だけです）、ネズミのような動物です。
It was the size of a postage stamp and just as thin,and was a thin covering around their walnut-sized brain,
それらの新皮質は切手ほどの大きさで本当に薄く、くるみ程の大きさの脳を薄く包んでいました。
but it was capable of a new type of thinking.
しかし、それは新しい思考が可能でした。
Rather than the fixed behaviors that non-mammalian animals have,it could invent new behaviors.
哺乳類以外の動物が行う決められた習慣よりも、それは新しい習慣を発明できました。
So a mouse is escaping a predator,it's path is blocked, it'll try to invent a new solution.
例えばマウスが敵から逃げています、その通路が塞がれたら、新しい解決策を模索するでしょう。
That may work, it may not,but if it does, it will remember that and have a new behavior,and that can actually spread virally through the rest of the community.
逃げ切れるかもしれないし、逃げ切れないかもしれないが、もし逃げ切れたなら、それは記憶され新しい習慣になるでしょう。そして、それは残りの集団のなかで感染的に広がります。
